Sharing
for marimba duet

Sharing started as an improvisation between myself and my dear friend/composer Dylan Smith. The two of us stood at one marimba and simply played without discussion or rehearsal. At first we both metronomically beat on the same pitch an octave apart. Gradually, one of us would add a note and the other would add something in response. Eventually, through our expanding additions, our ranges overlapped and the illusion of a third line was created. This written composition is based on that day. I took the initial session and fleshed out the harmonic development by shifting the registers and roles for the players and added a cymbal part.
Sharing was originally premiered at an SIUE Percussion Ensemble concert.
Requirements:
One large marimba - One cymbal(preferably a splash)
