Euclid of Alexandria, the Father of Geometry, serves as the namesake for this piece. The same principles that are at work within his Euclidean algorithm are at play in what is also called “Euclidean Rhythm.” Whereas the algorithm serves to find the greatest common divisor in a given set of numbers, the rhythm seeks to find the most even distribution of a fixed pulse within a bar. This results in the formation of polyrhythms. Using this concept as my inspiration I explore the relationship between two opposing pulses that when played on one voice forms a standard linear rhythm. When played on two different voices the Euclidean rhythm becomes more clear to the listener.
