Trail Mix is a piece intended for intermediate high school bands and collegiate concert bands. The goal was to create an artistic work that would be approachable for younger musicians, without being too pedagogically sterile. Programmatically, the piece presents two tunes from the composer's heritage, The Cherokee Morning Song and Scotland the Brave. Each tune gets stated in full before sounding off together. The mashing of the two tunes together results in a harmonious celebration of the Scots-Cherokee connection and in turn, one of the many stories that go into shaping the narrative of America.
